Until now, the “intelligence” of AI has consisted of providing answers in chatbots based on statistical probabilities. What sets the new reasoning models apart is that chat histories are no longer based solely on patterns in data, but are the result of multi-step thinking, logical reasoning, planning, and problem-solving, as well as reflection and error correction.
So AI is now thinking for itself: It can analyze intermediate steps and solve complex problems in a structured way. It can analyze situations, identify cause-and-effect relationships, and draw conclusions that aren’t immediately apparent from the data. In addition, new reasoning models can create a kind of „mental map“ to systematically find the best solution. They can evaluate their own answers and even correct themselves— AI is coming of age.
